Join me in New York
Over three days, you'll paint alongside me and learn the full process I use in my work — combining traditional oil painting technique with mixed media.
This workshop is for both beginners and experienced painters who want to bring something new into their practice. You'll experiment with mixed media, develop a portrait or figure, and learn an effective method to combine both experimental and traditional approaches into a single, finished piece.
Here's what we will cover, at a glance:
01
Abstract Grounds
Mixed-media techniques and experimental exercises to loosen your approach, break creative blocks, and build interesting, layered grounds to work into.
02
Build the portrait
Learn how to nail proportions, gesture, likeness, value and edges — plus my favourite tricks for compelling, lifelike portraits.
03
Mix skin tones with confidence
Master a simple, effective method to mix realistic skin tones for any complexion — no guesswork, no mud.
04
Bring it together
Throughout the three days you'll integrate the portrait with the mixed-media surface, learning how to bring the realist and experimental elements together into a finished piece.

"For the first time I mixed rich, luminous skin tones — without mud, without fear. My first oil portrait, and I loved it so much I joined the online school straight away"

"Three days with Rosso changed how I see the whole process. I left with a finished painting I’m proud of — and a way of working I still use.”
